My Perfect Pet Dog Food Review

My Perfect Pet Dog Food was created right after the 2006/2007 melamine pet food recalls where the founder’s dog passed away due to a lack of quality control within the dog food industry. Shaken to the core, they created My Pet Plate in order to offer pet parents a fresh, whole food option for our dogs.

My Perfect Pet Dog Food offers twelve different gently cooked diets for dogs, all recipes contain a targeted ratio of protein and carbohydrates (all diets contain whole potatoes that have been baked and flash cooled to convert into a resistant starch ). Half of the diets are grain-free and half are grain-inclusive. None of the diets contain lentils or peas.

The protein content of the My Perfect Pet diets are high at greater than 32% on a caloric basis, but fat and carbohydrate content vary by recipe. Carbohydrates are moderate to high (between 35-45% on a caloric basis), and fat content is low to moderate (between 19 to 32% on a caloric basis). This makes these diets good options for both high-energy dogs and those who need a less energy-dense food for weight maintenance. All recipes have been formulated to be complete and balanced for adult dogs except for their two Low Phosphorus diets which are recommended for dogs with compromised kidney function. One of the diets are balanced for puppies (the Buckaroo Recipe).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ( FAQ )

Where to buy My Perfect Pet fresh Dog Food?

You can purchase My Perfect Pet online through their website or through a local quality dog food store in the USA. When you purchase the meals will come frozen, and will need to be thawed prior to serving. Their website allows you to purchase in bulk six-packs of their menu, which can be great for large-breed dogs. However for smaller breed dogs if you would like to set-up a varied meal plan it might be best to go into a local retailer so you don’t have to store as much extra product at home.

How do you store and feed My Perfect Pet?

My Perfect Pet will be either shipped frozen in recyclable coolers or purchased frozen from your local retailer, which means prior to feeding you will need to defrost the recipes. Each purchased bag is 3.5 lbs, and containers seven individually wrapped bars. Making defrosting and thawing food much easier. Each individual bar should defrost within 12-24 hours in the fridge.

However, if you do need to thaw food quickly for whatever reason (aka you forgot to thaw it overnight), you can do a “quick thaw” which can be done one of two ways. First, by using a bowl of cool water and placing the food in the plastic package into the water, rotate until thawed completely, about 15-30 minutes total. The second option is by removing the food from the package and placing in a microwave-safe container – then use the defrost setting on your microwave to thaw.

Keep in mind that My Perfect Pet should not be heated on the stovetop – this may potentially degrade heat-sensitive vitamins within the food and may cause deficiencies long-term. You should also not leave food on the counter to defrost – this is not considered food safe and may cause pets to get sick.

After thawing My Perfect Pet can be stored in your fridge for up to 3 days.

Is My Perfect Pet cooked Food Balanced for Puppies?

The My Perfect Pet Buckaroo Puppy Chicken and Beef is complete and balanced for puppies or gestating/lactating moms. The other recipes are only balanced for adult dogs.

My Perfect Pet vs. Kibble – how does it compare?

There are two main differences between a fresh food product like My Perfect Pet and a Kibbled product – and this comes down to cooking method and preservation method. Though My Perfect Pet does use human-grade ingredients, where a majority of pet foods do not – there are kibbled products on the market that do use high-quality ingredients as well.

Most kibbled dogs food are cooked at high temperatures for short amounts of time then dehydrated to remove moisture, then fats and preservatives are added to hep with palatability and shelf stability. This process is what makes it possible for kibble to stay on your counter, or cabinet rather than in your fridge or freezer.

Lightly cooked diets like My Perfect Pet are cooked at lower temperatures for shorter periods of time. Moisture is not removed from the diet, and no preservatives are added. Instead, food is stored in the freezer, and then thawed prior to feeding. This creates a high-quality fresh food diet that is minimally processed just to remove pathogens. Research has shown that fresh food diets can offer benefits to digestibility and the microbiome in comparison to kibbled diets.

Is My Perfect Pet a Raw Dog Food?

No, My Perfect Pet is not a raw dog food. While vegetables are raw and finely ground, all proteins are fully cooked to minimum FDA recommended temperatures for food safety. The main difference between a lightly cooked dog food like My Perfect Pet and a raw dog food is that My Perfect Pet cooks the food just enough to remove possible pathogens. This is extremely important as 20-50% of all meat in our local grocery stores is contaminated with pathogens (e.coli, salmonella, listeria) which can make our pets and the humans around them ill. According to research studies, there is no significant difference between lightly cooked meats and raw meats as far as their nutritional value, digestibility or microbiome benefits.

Can My Perfect Pet be Used as a Topper?

Yes, many pet parents use My Perfect Pet as a topper in order to encourage their pets to eat if they have picky pets. The smaller individual packages make this fairly easy to do as you have to store several recipes in your freezer and thaw out a rotation of different recipes at a time.

Some dog moms also choose to use My Perfect Pet as a meal topper in order to keep within their budget while giving their dog some of the benefits of a fresh, whole foods diet.

How much does My Perfect Pet Cost?

The cost of feeding My Perfect Pet will vary based on your dog, their age activity level, and the recipe you choose to feed. My Perfect Pet recommends feeding one food bar per da for the average 20 lb dog, which is between $4.00-$.85 per day depending on the blend. The current price of the My Perfect Pet Snuggles Chicken and Rice formula is $159.99 for 42 bars. A 50 lb dog who eats about 1000 calories per day would eat a bit over 2 ½ of these bars each day. The total cost per day would be about $9.79, and the price per month would be around $293.65. If you need a quote on how much it would cost to feed your own pup each month you can contact their customer service or your local pet food retailer who sells the My Perfect Pet Products for details. The cost of My Perfect Pet may be more or less expensive than what you are currently feeding, though it is about average for most lightly cooked pet food brands.

Are My Perfect Pet Recipes Good for Dogs with Allergies?

Allergies can come in two primary forms – food or environmental allergies – and the best food for dogs with allergies can depend on what type of allergies the dog has. Both of these types of allergies can have the same clinical signs like yeast infections, bacterial infections, and skin irritation. For dogs with food allergies, we simply avoid the foods that they are allergic to, most commonly this is chicken, beef, eggs, and dairy, however dogs can be allergic to any food item. For dogs with food allergies probably the best diet would be the My Perfect Pet Hunter’s Turkey & Salmon as it avoids the most common allergens. However, your dog may be different.

For dogs with environmental allergies, we typically look for foods that contain the building blocks that are needed to repair the skin and certain types of fats (like omega 3 fatty acids) which are anti-inflammatory. The best recipe for dogs with environmental allergies is either the My Perfect Pet Hunter’s Turkey & Salmon or the My Perfect Pet Boomer’s Chicken & Beef – both of these recipes are high in protein, and have the best omega 3 to 6 ratio. However, as these recipes are lower in fat – adding additional omega 3 fatty acids (in particular fish oil) may be advised. Something like the Nordic Naturals Omega 3 Pet.

Are My Perfect Pet Meals Good for Dogs with Loose Stools or Diarrhea?

Typically when we look for diets for dogs with gastrointestinal disease we look for diets that are highly digestible and low in fat – these types of diets help dogs with conditions like gastritis (stomach inflammation) and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). The My Perfect Pet Snuggles Chicken and Rice may be a great option for dogs with these conditions as it is lower in fat (8% dry matter, 19% on a caloric basis) and uses a combination of fiber sources to help maintain a healthy digestible system. However, it is important to note that there are many causes of loose stools, and dogs with IBD/Food Intolerances may or may not do well on these diets.
